About Me.
Hello! My name is David Millman. I am a Knight-Hennessy Scholar and J.D. Candidate at Stanford Law School aiming to be a civil rights attorney and policy advocate. My work has been featured in USA Today, AP News, The Week, The Sacramento Bee, and many regional and local publications for my advocacy around housing affordability, sexual violence prevention, local government, climate change, and food insecurity. Before coming to law school, I was a zoning district author and candidate for local office in New Hampshire, a state sexual violence prevention nonprofit director (The Every Voice Coalition), and Dartmouth College’s Student Body President.
I am currently the co-director of Stanford Law School’s Campus Survivors Pro Bono and the Housing Pro Bono projects, helping both vulnerable students and tenants navigate complex legalistic systems. I recently launched the Campus Survivors Project, which aims to write and pass state legislation in California to better support student survivors of sexual violence. I am also the Lead Online Editor for the Stanford Law and Policy Review. In my free time, I love to act on stage, recently appearing in the law school’s student run MuSLSical!
When I was 19 years old, I ran for local office because I saw that things needed to change in my college town. What started as an exercise in youthful rebellion turned into a multi-year campaign around reforming zoning laws and restoring civic participation. This exposure to local government, in combination with my long-standing fight against sexual violence, has led me to pursue a law degree at Stanford University. I want to work to elevate people’s stories and use law, advocacy, and public policy to help communities and the those in them, particularly by addressing inequalities, climate change, and our nation’s housing crisis.
I have presented my work in front of town councils, state legislatures, and even the UK Parliament. While at Dartmouth College, I was honored to be the first-ever male recipient of Hannah T. Croasdale Award, which is “awarded each year to the member of the Senior Class who has made the most significant contribution to the quality of life for women at Dartmouth”, due to my longstanding commitment and work against sexual violence on campus. As Student Body President, I helped lead the campaign for the implementation of free teletherapy services on campus, establish a now-institutionalized campus food pantry, and design new campus bus routes for students to get home safely — all initiatives which continue to this day.
I believe that so much positive work can be done with good people in government. My work and academic experiences continue to shape my toolset in order for me to be the most effective public advocate for change. Most recently, I completed my Master’s dissertation on effective strategies around empowering the homelessness in Central London. I have appeared in USA Today, AP News, Yahoo News, The Week, Sacramento Bee, Concord Monitor, NHPR, Union Leader, NH Bulletin, Valley News, WMUR9, RVAMag, Richmond Times Dispatch, and more for my advocacy work around accessible housing policy, civic engagement, mental health awareness, sexual assault prevention, food insecurity advocacy, and more. Always happy to talk to people!
Also, I grew up loving to act and make home videos, so I am always looking for the chance to get on stage, film, write, or engage in some form of artistic work. If you’re interested, here’s a photography contest entry of mine, and here are some pictures from a recent performance I was in of Leaving by Václav Havel!
